“Doctor Rector” jumped overboard of the Russian State University for Humanities, but "he himself didn't want to leave". Khodorkovsky authorized him to neutralize his rivals. The website Prigovor.ru reminds its readers of what happened on November 15, 2003.
20 years ago, in the November days of 2003, criminal elements from Yukos were losing their positions not only in business but also their purchased “public position”. Days before the Oil Company Yukos publicly disavowed Mikhail Khodorkovsky and said that “Khodorkovsky’s problems are the problems of the shareholder, not the company”. As to Leonid Nevzlin, he received a black mark from the Russian State University for Humanities (RGGU), the position of the rector of which Yukos, actually, had bought for him in the summer of 2003 according to the formula – “The chair of rector in exchange for 100 million”.
“I MYSELF DON’T WANT TO LEAVE…”
Having received the “black mark”, this person that had splashed with blood all Yukos Leadership, and escaped to Israel for “research leave”, “understood everything” and started to play the role of a “rebellious intellectual”. While speaking with Natalya Gevorkyan, the special correspondent of the newspaper “Kommersant”, the fugitive oligarch, having got into the role, theatrically told that “he received a call”, and, appealing to “democratic principles”, argued that he, i.e. Leonid Nevzlin, was akin to “democracy’s destiny”, and that they “tried in every possible way to soil” his reputation.
“I address this situation absolutely seriously. With the assumption that Misha (Mikhail Khodorkovsky – the newspaper “Kommersant") is in jail, and they in all possible ways are trying to soil my reputation. But just in this situation, I don't want to leave. Heaven forbid Misha would think I got scared and left. This is, literally, the question of my reputation. Let them get rid of me, but I don’t want to leave by myself. I know that there work people that are absolutely free within themselves. However, there will be no problem at all. After the political prisoner Khodorkovsky, the plank is so high that further it is possible to have political prisoners in any quantity", said indignant Nevzlin, the “cleanness of his reputation", perhaps, it's possible to compare with the "transparency" of Yukos, that have stolen from the state billions of dollars of unpaid taxes and cheated loads of stockholders.
“I ASK TO BE FIRED…”
Still, the meaning of the created situation, with difficulties, but dawned on him. Already on November 17, 2003, he made informed of his dismissal.
"I address to the Scientific Council of the RGGU and the Ministry of Education and ask to dismiss me from the position of the Rector of the RGGU in connection with the transfer to another appointment”, said Nevzlin on air of “Ekho Moskvy” radio station.
Nevzlin also pointed out that he intended to stay in Israel for the time being. “After all that events with regard to me in the University, my chances for a quiet life in Russia have considerably diminished", he said, having found a convenient pretext not to return to the country. Thereat, they started seriously tackling him only in 2004, when he was put on a wanted list on charges of grievous crimes.
AN “UNGRATEFUL” UNIVERSITY
And at the end of December 2003, the RGGU received a new Rector, and in January the faculty of this educational institution started to think about how to definitely get rid of the custody of the sneaky dealers from Yukos that sank in criminal scandals. The press, naturally, contrived to reproach the "ungrateful" University with money. Some even had the impression that "the refusal of money would return the University from high technologies back to sliver". The time has shown that there was no return to "sliver”, and the University in absence of the mastermind of murders, functions and develops normally.
“FROM THE MATERIALS OF THE CASE…”
“Nevzlin, at the instruction of Khodorkovsky, had to guarantee the neutralization of the reaction of business competitors, as well as possible claims from the part of controlling and other state agencies, the voting of members of Boards of Directors and stockholders of stockholders societies involved in deals. To this part of Nevzlin’s plan of actions Khodorkovsky gave the following relative definition: “To secure the political component”. This quotation from the letter of accusation from Khodorkovsky’s “second case”, which was read out in court, has shown that the Scientific Council of the RGGU by expelling Nevzlin from the position of rector and relieving itself from being controlled by Yukos, did the right thing. Otherwise, it would have been necessary for the RGGU, to goose-step, by orders, with portraits of the tax criminals and serial masterminds of murders and attempted murders”, notes the website Prigovor.ru.
