On this day 19 years ago, on October 22, 2004, the Moscow Bassmanny Court confirmed the legitimacy of issuing an international arrest warrant against Leonid Nevzlin, “main shareholder” of the company Yukos, accused of masterminding murders and attempted murders (Articles 30, 33 and 105 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation). The Court, having analyzed the materials of the case and having heard arguments of the parties, rejected the cassation appeal of Nevzlin’s lawyers pertaining to the ruling of the Office of the Prosecutor General from July 21, 2004. By this document, the citizen Nevzlin Leonid Borisovich is put on the international wanted list in connection with serious Articles of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation.
IT SMELLED OF GUNPOWDER AND BLOOD
In July 2004, the Office of the Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation brought a charge against Nevzlin of masterminding murders and attempted murders. On the same day, the Moscow Basmanny Court selected in absentia a measure of restriction with regard to Nevzlin – to place under detention. As far as Nevzlin had escaped to Israel, he was out on an international wanted list. The defense of this serial contractor of murders was very dissatisfied with all these circumstances choosing the tactic of systematic challenging of key actions of the investigation agencies if not all of them. Among others, the ruling of "Putting on a wanted list" was no exception. If the first circular note contained only "economical" aspects of Nevzlin’s criminal activity, like tax evasion of him as a physical person (Article 198, paragraph 2 of the Criminal Code of Russia), as well as misappropriation and embezzlement (Article 160, paragraph 3 of the Criminal Code of Russia), the sum of the understated taxes amounted to more than 27 million rubles, the damage of the embezzlement 3.3 billion rubles, then the second smelled of gunpowder and blood.

“The investigation has collected enough evidence, including direct proofs, that Leonid Nevzlin, being a member of the Board of Directors of the JSC “The Oil Company Yukos” and first deputy president of the Board of Directors of the LLC “Yukos-Moskva”, had entered into a criminal conspiracy with the head of the Department of inner and economic security Alexey Pichugin to murder certain persons, which represented a certain danger for the company, as well as for Nevzlin and Pichugin themselves. In all cases, Nevzlin gave direct orders to Pichugin with regards to arranging murders and carrying them out”, said the statement of the Office of the Prosecutor General of the Russian Federation, clarifying its position.

While choosing the level of restrictions in the form of confinement under guard, the Court took into consideration that Leonid Nevzlin had been accused of extremely serious crimes, that he had been not living at the address of his registration, that he had hidden himself from prosecution agencies, and in connection with that he had been put on federal and international wanted lists”, pointed out the statement of the Office of the Prosecutor General.

NEVZLIN GOT STUCK IN THE EUROPEAN COURT OF HUMAN RIGTH
In May 2008, Nevzlin ran off a complaint to a European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR), assuring the court of the political underpinning of the criminal prosecution of the "main shareholders" of Yukos. Strasbourg "communicated" it only in October 2018, i.e. at the time when the myth about the political background of the "Yukos case" had been already exploded by the ruling of the ECtHR itself.
The verdict in connection with the case of Nevzlin accused of masterminding murders and attempted murders was not only read out, but, having passed all corresponding echelons, became final and biding, thus attaching to him, durante vita, his dark and bloody history.
